2009 ford mustang convertable review

Here I am stuck on an airplane hoping for some good old fashioned turbulence thinking what I could to kill off this hour.. Hey I started a car review about my old Camry, maybe I should write a review on the mustang I spent a weekend in.

The mustang is an age old icon introduced in the sixties which has gone through a number of iterations to reach their current generation; an obvious tribute to their beginnings.

Now a car amature might call the mustang a sports car. The insurance companies might call it a sports car, but let’s face it it’s an iconic muscle car. Not a true muscle car unless you have invested double to three times the base vehicle price in order to buy a cobra or Shelby, and a true gear head shouldn’t accept anything short of the Roush, the only mustang whose creators have blessed with independent rear suspension.  A slight reminder why Roush is a top dog in NASCAR.

Thanks to Jeremy Clarkson, I can provide some video proof of the actual capabilities as shown below.  Its just a shame a lill go kart can out lap even the best of mustangs.

But enough complaining about the sportiness, lap times and quarter mile times are not everything; and unless you’re some rich bastard who’s looking for a track day car you’re looking at the wrong one in addition to a sheep load of required mods. For the normal people out there you’ll most likely be buying the mustang as a daily driver, or a car you plan to drive on a semi-regular basis on real roads, not perfect little tracks like Clarkson examples on.

Being new to the actual utilitarianism of the mustang, I was quite surprised how well the convertible retained its usefulness.  The back seat fit me with enough comfort for short drive, anything more than an hour would probably drive me crazy with cramps.  I stand at 6′ tall with a very average leg to torso ratio.  I’m not saying the front seat wouldn’t need to be moved forward, but I believe all things aside, 4 full sized adults could travel for reasonable distances.  The trunk quite literally amazed me with size after knowing what a convertible does to the trunk.  I’m very much interested in mustang coupe’s back seat and trunk sizes since the convertible managed to not steal away from either as much as one would have expected.  The trunk did have a difficult  opening to deal with.  I ended up loosing a few items to the depth of the trunk only to be found at the end of the journey when I was cleaning out the trunk.

The interior was nice enough, however back seats where light and cheep; feeling almost like they needed a tag on them with a weight limit.  Front seats and the handling didn’t bother me much, 6 hours of driving was in deed boring, but I never got sick and tired of the way the car handled and felt.

All in all, the vehicle was decent.  Worth the price tag?  Would I hold out for the GT if I could afford it?  Probably.  However on paper; dollar for dollar, spec for spec, I’d rather seek out an S2000 or a Mini Cooper S; however neither vehicles have beauty which the mustang holds.

Prove me wrong, or prove me right.  If you have a Mini Cooper S Convertable available for review, or a Honda S2000 available for a review let me know.
